The Revert 4
Darkness is everywhere! Can't tell whether it is day or night, just like any other basements in this part of the city. Trying to move the right hand, Ruby felt a sharp pain.
'May be it's a sprained wrist. Not a biggy!'
Ruby told herself. It's day-to-day incident now since she decided to be more sincere about her religion. Being borne in a so called Muslim family, hasn't proved to be beneficial for her thirst for knowledge. To them, being Muslim means stay away from pork, pray the Eid prayer and occasional drinking in the parties. This is what means to be an American Muslim.
But Ruby started walking against the tide! That's when everything fell apart. The brother who adored her the most became her worst enemy. Now he doesn't even flinch to swing a baseball bat at her! The effort to stop that blow caused her the wrist sprain. Ruby could've called the police and complained, but she didn't. She read about the Abysynian slave Bilal (ra). when he used to get tortured for accepting islam, he would keep reciting "Ahad" (the one God). It wasn't a cry for help from almighty but it was to prove how steadfast he was in the face of hardship.
Ruby took a long breath. 'I am getting used to with it. I want to to see how ruthless my family can become. It's good in a way, I am not gonna leave the Deen that I struggled so much for!'
A noise on the door, got Ruby out of her own thoughts. She covered herself with the big shawl she made out of the bedsheet.
-" Got some dinner for you. I cooked your favorite meal. Chicken roast with plain rice." Ruby's mom Shirin put the plate down.
- " I told you earlier mom, I am not gonna eat any poultry or meat unless they are slaughtered the halal way." Ruby looked away from the plate. The smell of the food and whole day unintentional fasting are bad combination.
"Please take it away. Just leave the water."
- " You don't have to be that much harsh. Islam doesn't teach us to be that much harsh to ourselves."
-" What does Islam teach, Mom?" Ruby looked at Shirin.
Shirin opened her mouth but didn't know what to say. This is the single question, she never pondered upon in her whole life. She got up and took the plates away but didn't forget to lock the door behind her.
------------
" Welcome to Fort Worth international Airport."
A flight attendant announced.
-" Back to the states! Welcome to America...." Parker said in a cinematic voice.
-" Where's Brian?" Asked Steve while stretching.
-" You know where, sleeping! I bet he didn't even notice the announcement. That b**** didn't let us sleep past couple of days and now he..."
Gilman got interrupted with a smack on the head.
-"Sorry, boss."
-" See you guys at the base." Brian left with a smirk.
-------------
-" Congratulations, Major for a successful mission."
-" Thank you, sir."
- "Lay low for some time with your crew."
- "Yes, sir"
- "Welcome home Major Thomas."
